Happy 2nd Birthday Dani!

Dani

Dani has been with us 4 weeks today and it’s her 2nd birthday! She is such a delight and she has added even more joy to our family. When she smiles her entire face lights up! It’s amazing and I hope she is always that way. We are all still getting to know each other and we can tell she is understanding more English every day. I expect that she will surprise us and start saying a lot of words at once.

Here is what she is saying clearly as of today:

  • Shoes, Go! Mama, Dada, Uh Oh, No!

We can also tell she is trying to say Thank You. She will go lay down if we say she needs a diaper change. I know she understands up, down, zip, go, stop, sit, stand up, your chair (as in go to your chair so we can eat), drink, eat, no, brush your teeth, change clothes, it’s time to go and more that I just can’t think of right now. In the last day or so she is more willing to wave hello or goodbye to people who do it to her first. Most the of the time though if a stranger gets too close to her she will either cry, turn away or both. Her tantrums are still pretty frequent, and it’s obviously a very hard habit we are trying to break in her – she is clearly used to getting what she wants by screaming and thrashing.

We love this little girl so much and are so grateful that God has blessed our family with her! I can’t imagine our life without her.

Two Weeks with Dani!

It’s just amazing to me that it’s already been two weeks with Dani. On Facebook I had this as a status the other night, “I wonder how God makes these precious children with hearts so open to love that you can become their entire world in less than two weeks. We have been blessed far beyond what we deserve.”

Here are a some observations about Dani:

  • Her smile and laugh are the most adorable things ever!
  • She is a happy kid.
  • She is absolutely thrilled any time she hears the words, “Let’s Go” or “Shoes”
  • She isn’t exactly fond of the car seat, but she will get used to it soon enough.
  • She loves to eat everything. From breads to all sorts of veggies.
  • She plays intensely and will spend a long time trying to figure things out.
  • If an item of clothing is on her that can be zipped or buttoned, she wants it zipped or buttoned. She is so intense about it that she even tries to zip or button our clothes too.
  • The tantrums are decreasing each day.
  • We think that she was favored at the orphanage/in her nighttime foster family. And because of that, she is not used to being told no.
  • She is helping to feed herself and drink out of a sippy cup now. We knew she could do it, but was having us do all of it for her. That was fine with us because feeding is good for bonding.
  • She gets excited to follow Nadia and Amelie around and is interacting with them a lot more.
  • She was largely silent for the first 10 days with us, just watching us intently when we talk to her and show her stuff. Now she is talking more and singing little songs. We can also tell that she is picking up on a lot of English fast.
  • She has loved exploring our house and all the toys.
  • She likes to dance to music and it’s really cute.
  • A new behavior of hers that she introduced us to yesterday is “playing possum.” I am not exaggerating that she actually plays dead if you tell her something she doesn’t want to hear. It’s better than the screaming tantrum, but how in the world does a tiny kid like her learn that?

The girls are so excited about their new sister and can’t wait to go to China. It’s precious to hear them talk about all the things they want to show her and teach her. I know that they are still going to be stressed out about the changes our family will be going through as we add a new child. I wanted to have a special day with them doing some big girl stuff and told them it was our special day. We headed over to the Fort Worth Science and History museum to see the IMAX film “Flying Monsters” which was about the first flying dinosaurs. The film was interesting and the special effects were pretty good. After seeing the show we went into the museum to see the new “Wizard of Oz” exhibit. It was very kid friendly and the girls loved it!!! I thought it was adorable.

We ended our day by having frozen yogurt with all the tasty toppings. It was a wonderful day before our wild China adventure begins.

Valentines was our 3rd Gotcha Day with Amelie. This year we let her pick what she wanted to do to celebrate. She immediately said she wanted to go to the zoo. The weather was beautiful and we had such a nice time. We ran into the Welch family and spent some time checking out the giraffes, elephants and feeding the fish. Later in the day we saw them again and rode the Yellow Rose Express train back to the entrance.

After the zoo we decided to try out Paco & John for lunch. This place looks like a hole in the wall, but it’s gourmet place. We all decided that it was the best guacamole we had ever tried. The girls loved their quesadillas and I thought the street tacos were delicious. Amelie was so happy all day and she especially enjoyed all the “big girl” headbands that we gave her in the morning.
