She’s as touched in the head as the one who said RQ was the antiChrist. Sooooo, as for wonderful things about the South: we say Bless Your Heart & mean it when we say it. Chili and chili cookoffs! Do it yourself fireworks (does that make us rednecks or pyromaniacs?). Our accents – they vary from state to state, but if you had to swear on that Bible we were accused of thumping, wouldn’t you swear it’s lyrical and more beautiful than any of the others in THIS country? This may only be true of Texas (I live in Arkansas now & they don’t do it here), but if you’re following behind someone on a county highway & THEY want to mosey but realize you want to get where you’re going quicker, THEY will pull over on the shoulder to allow you to pass. That has to be the best display of driving manners in the nation.Sort of eliminates the cause of road rage, doesn’t it? I just have to say it: May God continue to bless the South.

I am a city gal, married to a country boy. I think one of the things that made me fall in love with him was his opening doors for me. Living in the big city of Washington, DC at the time you can bet THAT didn’t happen often. I love that he still does this. I credit his dear Mama with many of his gentle, loving ways.

The one thing not on your list (and maybe it’s a Virginia thing and not a Texas thing?) … “pulled to”. Used to drive me over the edge. Pulled to what??? If you are still scratching your head, it’s when you close a door but not all the way. Pulled to … the door jamb.

Oh and grits …. now that I know how to make them, yuuuuuuum! But that comes after 15 years of trying and trying and trying to make them. He ate them, every single time, exclaiming how good they were. But once I learned (by accident) to cook them twice as long as the package states I realized how horrible they were. My sweet country gentleman, ate them for years and years the yucky way.

And yes, it IS the middle of the night. Little Bit decided that she needed Mama and a bottle (not necessarily in that order!). She’s sawing logs (as is Daddy), Mama is wide awake! 🙂

Cheers! Kiy

I am a World Vision volunteer and saw your blog after receiving your phone call and email today about helping out next month with the WV Africa/AIDS presentation. I have a question for you! After seeing the picture of you and your baby girl with a female family member and her baby I presume, I think I recognize someone in the picture! She looks so much like a friend I went to high school with and who was on my volleyball team in Grapevine, Texas. Would I be correct if I guessed her name was Beth? If so, even the Internet is a very very small world! If I am correct, please email me back at texasbleu@yahoo.com because I don’t know if I will remember how I got to your blog! Anyways, this is Kelli Paul but Beth would remember my last name as Haus. It would be crazy to know that I recognized a random picture of a high school classmate on the Internet correctly!

Hope to hear back from you Louanne! And Yes, I will be volunteering at the WV program at the church in Richardson next month.

Thanks for all you do for WV and the beautiful children of this world, including your precious baby girl!!

God bless!!!

cheese straws

deep fried turkey (okay, I know this is now a national garage burning phenomenon, but the first time I had it was in Good Water, Alabama)

shrimp (think Bubba Gump here, boiled, fried….) nothing better than getting it fresh

And on a very personal note – one of the best things about the South will always be the ache in my heart for my late BIL, Tim. He was a wonderful man, devoted father and dear son of the South in every way.

Sadly, the days of people pulling over out of respect for the funeral procession are getting few and far between. My M-I-L raised a fine son with my husband. After 20 years of marriage, he still opens the door for me (car or otherwise)-tips his cowboy hat to the ladies and will ALWAYS let a lady pass thru the door first. He no sirs and no ma-am’s everyone (he is from Alabama) by the way-further south than me-Please do not forget white beans and cornbread as a main staple-nothing is more satisfying and filling that this meal…And if people want to call me a bible thumper-well, that is a title I will wear proudly-though I probably do not thump my bible as often or as loud as I should!

Some of my favorites:

– Tex-Mex food, especially fajhitas
– Weather reliably warm enough to wear shorts from roughtly Ground Hog Day to Thanksgiving.
– People openly praying in restaurants and talking about their faith in public.
– Half Price Books – Okay, it’s mostly a DFW thing, but it’s just such a great store.

Although, there are a few things about the South that I just don’t get.
– Grits. I’ve tried them, but unless the ratio of grits to cheese is about 1:1, I just don’t like them. I’ll stick with oatmeal, thank you very much.
– Hockey commentators who don’t sound Canadian. I’m sorry but if a hockey commentator doesn’t have a Canadian accent, there’s a better than even chance that he’s not going to be any good.

And, two things that I miss about California:
– In-and-Out Burgers
– Mountains
