When the Homeschool Buyers Co-op had a sale on the Home Art Studio curriculum I snagged all the levels. I wanted them for the girls and I knew I was going to be teaching art for the younger kids in our homeschool co-op this year. As I was deciding on which lessons to teach, I thought the girls needed to be my guinea pigs timing wise. I chose the ‘Color Mixing Hands’ so that Amelie could take part too. I prepped all the supplies in advance and then let the girls watch the DVD. We paused as needed and it was easy for them to follow along.

This was the end of part one and we had to leave the hand prints to dry. PS. I love our new elastic edge vinyl tablecloth that I can pull out for projects like this.

Now it was time to mix up the background colors.

The finished project. Amelie’s looks a little wild, but considering it is a kindergarten project, I think she did a great job.

Counting to Costumes

I told Amelie that it was time to practice her numbers in a new way. I printed some K4 worksheets, laminated them and bought these cute plastic clothes pins at the dollar store. I explained it all to her and before she started, she needed a costume. Once Nadia was finished with her math work, she asked if she could play with the clothespins. A few minutes later they asked me for some pipe cleaners.

I walked back in the kitchen to find this adorable girl and her crown.

Then she said Amelie needed a crown too and made her one.

Mornings like this make me so happy that we homeschool. Too bad they won’t be able to wear costumes when they grow up and get jobs 😉

Caterpillars in the garden

One night in July I was taking care of my garden when I noticed 2 caterpillars making a buffet out of my parsley and carrot leaves. Of course I decided we needed to bring them inside and have a quick science lesson before bed.

Amelie was very interested in watching these little guys crawl around and eat the leaves.

After we watched them and researched that they are Black Swallowtail Caterpillars, I took them out to the front yard and put them on a tree. Live long little buddies, just not in my garden 🙂

Downtown Firehouse Tour

My friend Tricia arranged for a group of us to go and tour the downtown Fort Worth firehouse and it was so great! This is the one of the firehouses in town with the poles for the firemen to slide down. When we arrived one of the trucks and the chief were out on a call, but there were a few firefighters still there to lead our tour.

First they showed us around downstairs in the garage area. They spent a long time answering questions from everyone and then the kids got to go inside the truck. Nadia wasn’t so sure about it, but she got in line anyway. Amelie on the other hand was “all in!”

I thought the most interesting thing we learned was that the firefighters at this station all have to be trained in rope and entrapment rescue. I know there is a more technical term, but basically they do a lot of rescue for people who jump out of or fall out of buildings downtown. Plus they do hazardous materials rescue and save people who get trapped in confined spaces.

The last thing they showed us was their gym. They are the only firehouse in town with a basketball court and all the workout equipment. They gave the kids a bunch of balls to play with and let them have at it. The kids had a blast! While we were upstairs the team that was out on a call came back and they came upstairs to see the kids too.

As we were walking down the stairs to leave the alarm went off and when the men saw what kind of call it was they took off to respond. We all thought that was kind of cool to see in action, but I didn’t get any photos since we were trying to stay out of the way.

This cool bell is on one side of the building. What a great time we had at the firehouse!
