Culture Shock and the cost of Food!!!

2 hats

I’ll start with a photo of the cute girl. In February Amy H. in MO gave these to Nadia. She only puts hats on when it’s her choice and last night she wanted to try this one on for the first time. Then of course her “baby” needed to wear the little one.

I think I am over the worst of the culture shock – although I feel like the corners and streets of Fort Worth are just empty. I drove up to the school to mentor today and kept feeling like I needed to be watching for pedestrians and bicyclists to run out across the street. After visiting with everyone at church on Sunday I ran into the QT to get us a few soda’s and I got all disoriented because everything was in English. I had to remind myself that I can read here! And for the first 36 hours or so I kept wanting to turn the stereo on and play some pop music because we heard American pop music for 12 hours a day in the apartment – mixed with the horns from the streets.

We went to Target last night to get out of the house and pick up some odds and ends. (Joy and Janis had bought us a bunch of fresh stuff like eggs, salad and milk which was just wonderful to have in the fridge!) And after I paid I thought, “That was 350 YUAN! Do you know how much food I could have bought at the Lotus for that?” Then tonight we went up to Pappasito’s for the Mexican food we had been craving and I was traumatized by the price. My frugal little self got WAY to used to the cost of food in China. But the delicious enchilada’s were worth it! I have slowly but surely been working through all my friends’ blogs and catching up now that we are home. But I feel like I should be blogging every, single day like I did in China.

In China we would say to Nadia, “What sound does a taxi make?” And she would say, “Honk! Honk!” On our second day home I asked her that and she said, “NO!” And now she won’t do the honk at all. She always says no. It’s like she is saying, “I am over the taxis now that we are home. No more honking.” And she has continued to be just fine in her car-seat which is great.

17 month stats

It turns out that Nadia only gained 2 ounces in China. I have decided that her being in 12 layers of clothes per day caused us to believe that she had gained because we were carrying her around. Hee hee. She did grow 1 inch though, so I was right about that. Now she is in the 53% for height, but she is still in the 5% for weight. We are going to have to go through all her clothes again. She has been in 12 month clothes for a couple months and they are baggy around the middle, but some are too short now.

We’re HOME!!

Home again

The first thing I would like you to notice here is that Nadia is in short sleeves and her legs are EXPOSED!! It was a beautiful first day home and 85 degrees. We headed up to church tonight for the mission trip fundraiser and I wore a skirt and sandals. After 30 days in a row of jeans, it was awesome!

Second, sorry if anyone had any trouble getting to the blog. After a year our hosting service decided with no warning to change a technical setting and didn’t let us know. So it’s been down almost 24 hours without us realizing it. And our email went down at the same time!

The trip home was long, but uneventful. The flight from China seemed to go fast and Nadia did great as usual. We are so blessed that she is such a good traveler. We nearly missed our connecting flight in Chicago because it took so long to get our bags and through customs. And NO ONE told us we would have to go through security again. That really annoyed me after traveling for so long. And I forgot that I had a coke in my bag from the plane and Nadia’s sippy cup. So we got pulled aside for 2 bag checks by the TSA. We got through security and Mike asked what our gate was and what time it was. I said B2 and 5:50. The flight was supposed to take off at 5:59 pm. Mike said, I bet we can make it and started to book it. I told him, go, go. I didn’t even have my shoes tied and was dragging 2 carry ons. He kept getting farther ahead and I said, “Keep going, they will hold the door if you get there.” As he rolled up with Nadia they were calling the final boarding call. We thanked the guy and ran down the jet way. As we were running we heard the door SLAM behind us. They told us, “Leave the stroller and get on the plane.”

I was panting and totally out of breath and everyone on the plane was just sitting there all peaceful. So thank goodness that we didn’t have to sit around Chicago for hours for the next flight and we landed early at DFW. When we came to the baggage area and saw Joy and Janis I nearly teared up I was so excited. We were home! Nadia went right into her car seat, which was great. I was a bit afraid that she would resist since she had been free to go from person to person in taxis in China.

On the drive home I was weirded out that all the drivers stayed in their own lanes and no one was honking. 🙂 Further, I will be honest that when we got home I laid my head down on the kitchen counter when we got all the bags in and said, “Oh kitchen, how I have missed you.” Also, Nadia was MANIC for her toys. Janis got right down on the floor with her to play. Her and Joy got her the Fisher Price Little People in Easter eggs that are so darn cute! Janis also brought it to our attention that Nadia kept stopping playing to rub her hands on the carpet. It was cute since she hadn’t seen any carpet for a month, she liked how it felt I guess.

We visited with Joy and Janis for a bit, then they left and we ordered pizza a little while later. Nadia went to sleep and we crashed soon after. Laying down on the soft bed was the most wonderful thing!!! And in a quiet house. Ahhhhhhhhh. Jet lag had Mike and I up from 3 – 6 am and Nadia up from 4:30 – 6 am. But I have to be honest that this time I am tired, but I don’t feel like I was run over by a bus. Mike says that is seems like only a taxi ran over me. 🙂

Jen and Nadia

My cousin Jen came up to visit from Sugarland last weekend. She hadn’t been up here since Nadia was baptized back in September and boy has Nadia changed since then. Most of Nadia’s waking hours were spent in playtime. Jen also ran around with me to complete a few pre-trip errands while Nadia napped, like getting my hair cut and so on. We all went to eat at Pappasitos’s. YUM!!! We had to have a little Tex-Mex fix before we are out of the country for a month. Jen also joined us for a trip to Fry’s to pick up a step down transformer and a couple of adaptors for the apartment. We were so grateful for her keeping the cuteness entertained.

While Mike was looking at computer software we wandered off and were watching some kids play “Rock Band”. I got all psyched out that I wanted to play the drums. So a guy who ACTUALLY knew how the game worked offered to play guitar and let me pick the song. I choose “Wanted Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi. It was so much fun, but I kept laughing and would get major off beat. Nadia was getting excited and pretending to bang drum sticks like me. So after we finished Jen and Nadia got in the drummers seat and I took up the guitar. We failed the song 3 times in a row because I just couldn’t get my groove on, but Jen and Nadia were great drummers. Another guy came up to play guitar and I switched to bass. MUCH better and we didn’t fail the song. I have got to tell you that “Rock Band” is a really fun game. I have seen it on a TV review and on other people’s blogs. It was great fun!!

On Sunday Jen and I went to church so that I could get some KIDS HOPE stuff done. After church we went to lunch with a friend from church. We went to Pei Wei because “it’s tradition.” Then we came home and Jen got some more Nadia time in before she had to head home and back to life as the super duper Jr. High Spanish teacher that she is. (Teacher of the Year I would like to add).

Thanks for coming to see us Jen! You know I adore you and think that you are one of the most awesome people that I know. Your sweet heart and love for God have been a great example to me…..from the time we were teens and I wanted to be like you 🙂 And from that I learned about the Lord, and became addicted to PJ’s.

This photo is of Nadia in her Apple Hat that was made by Leigh at Mike’s office. TOO CUTE! And oh my gosh I love this photo of Nadia!
