First Outfit

First Outfit

This is the first outfit I ever bought for Nadia and today is the first time she has worn it. Last summer it was still too big. August will be 5 years since I bought it – can you believe that? Jessica P and I were out shopping for Abby’s 1st birthday outfits for the photos Mike was going to take of her. We had recently found out that we couldn’t adopt from China until I turned 30 and I just wanted to buy SOMETHING 🙂

And here is Nadia showing good brushing habits to the camera.

My 1st Mother’s Day!

Click on the photo above for the whole slideshow, but I warn you now that I was a bit indecisive and uploaded a bunch of the playing shots from this afternoon because Nadia is so darn cute.

Happy Mother’s Day to all my fellow moms – especially my buddies who are celebrating their 1st like me. Being a mom is a wonderful blessing and having Nadia is just awesome! She is so full of personality and just so sweet that she makes our days so fun. Friday night we went to PF Chang’s and it was delicious! As an ex-server I didn’t want to go out today and add to the stress for the wait-staff, plus fight all the crowds. So we had a peaceful meal and Nadia attracted lots of attention from the staff – which is usually what happens 🙂

Louanne and Nadia

This shot is of Nadia and I before church this morning. After church we grabbed some fast food and headed home. Mike got the new web cam set up so I can talk to Michelle and Tahni while they are off studying in foreign countries this summer. And so I can talk to Kiki in China and brush up on my Chinese. Yeah!! I think we are just going to relax the rest of the afternoon (and I am going to eat cookies!)

This evening we went out to play with the bubble machine and bubble gun and Mike captured some great shots. Here are a few.

Once again – Happy Mother’s Day to all!

No more NON MOMS

As of around 5 pm yesterday the website was changed. Instead of “The NON Mom Mom” it said “The Adoptive Mom”. Which really doesn’t fit the grandmother in the category, but I think that they were totally shocked by the bad attention they were getting 3 days before Mother’s Day. Last night there was a statement on the website from Teleflora saying that they were sorry about their insensitivity towards adoptive moms.

As of this morning the site is completely different and says the voting has ended, so please watch the show tomorrow night. It’s pretty amazing to me that the non mom thing ever passed through that many people in marketing and no one noticed that it was inappropriate. The Teleflora statement even said that people in their company were also adoptive parents. One other funny thing I noticed was the category of “The ‘COE’ Chairman of Everything Mom” I think they made this because they clearly didn’t want to say ‘Stay at home Mom’.

But somehow the adoptive mom got put in the non-mom category 🙂

The NON-Mom???

Soapbox alert!!!!

Something that obviously annoys me is if I hear comments made like the following (to me or any other adoptive parent):

  • Don’t you want to have your OWN baby? (UM DUH – Nadia is my baby)
  • You’ll never love her like you would your OWN baby. (Dream on. There is no possible way that I could love Nadia more if I gave birth to her. NO WAY, NO HOW)
  • You’re not her REAL mom. (Here, come touch my arm. Am I an apparition? I feel pretty real)
  • She’s not your REAL baby. (see above)
  • I’m so sorry you can’t have your OWN children (this I hate because it’s always accompanied by a sorrowful look).

Okay, so you get the idea. Annoying and ignorant. Seriously. We chose to adopt rather than have a biological child. It doesn’t change that fact that we are parents and we love Nadia. She is our family and always will be. God just sent us halfway around the world to make us a family.

Now you may be wondering what got me all riled up about this. It’s a ridiculous contest that NBC is having for Mother’s Day (America’s Favorite Mom). You can vote for your favorite mom and they win a prize. A new category of MOM is featured daily. Here are the categories:

  • The Military Mom
  • The Working Mom
  • The Chairman of Everything Mom
  • The Single Mom
  • The NON MOM Mom

So guess what the description of a Non-Mom Mom is? Grandmothers, Step Moms and ADOPTIVE Moms!!!! Look at the description for one of the nominees:

“She was an adopted child who is now mom to her own daughter, plus six adopted children who started life as ‘meth babies’. ” (emphasis mine)

Lame, lame, lame. Adopted kids aren’t any different. I seriously don’t know how I am going to react if something like this is said in front of Nadia when she is old enough to understand. Some moms just walk away because they feel it’s not important to educate ignorant people in front of the child – they feel it makes it more obvious to the child that they are being singled out. Some moms stand there and lay it on the line for people and make sure they know how tasteless and rude the comments are.

I guess it will all depend on what type child Nadia ends up being personality wise as she ages. Will she be feisty and say something herself? Or will she just want to get away? I don’t know, but this really is something I wish we could protect her from. Rant over.
